I’m not sure, what to think of these pics from tonight’s Life Class.
Lamy fountain pen on 190gsm, A3, and Faber-Castell Albrecht Dürer pencil.
I’m sure my pen has moved more fluidly on past evenings, but building up tone with the Albrecht Dürer pencil was very therapeutic, even if not always too easy, what with the lighting conditions we have in our Life Class room.
It’s interesting to see that I only have 1 1/2 hours of drawings but the evening is 2 1/4 hours long. So we spend 45 minutes chatting and relaxing somewhere along the line.

I like these, especially the one on the far left, classically statuesque; Henry Moore? Your shading is much more accurate than in previous life collections, maybe more time? Have you tried using the contour lines that worked so well with your hands in life-drawing? Ed

Thanks for your comments and questions, Ed! The shading surprised me myself (and yes, I think I was shading in the small chat-breaks between the poses, so I guess I had more time than usual). Looking back to August this year, I see I was drawing in Life Class with contour lines. It actually just depends on my mood when I make my plan for the evening. I go to Life Class with a good idea of what I’d like to try out and I probably think I’ve tried out a lot of contour lines (e.g. the hands). But I like the effect; it’s just not as easy as building up values with tone. With the contour lines you can’t afford many mistakes, fixing them makes a mess of things. But I may give it a go again this Tuesday 🙂
